POLANKSI: The Heart of the Matter
okay, so after my initial post on the matter (uninformed and a bit rash, but my perspective remains unchanged), i’ve refrained from publishing follow-ups, as i wanted a more complete understanding of this whole fiasco. well, i have no idea who this phil nugent dude is or why the auteurs linked to him, but he sorta nailed it as far as i’m concerned.
for those of you who don’t take kindly to a lot of words congregating in one place, allow for a simplification.
1. Polanski did something very bad (likely several times).
2. It was 33 years ago.
2B. though his fears were legitimate, it was probably a tremendous mistake for him to flee.
3. Polanski’s celebrity contributed both to the crime and his recent arrest, yet beyond that has nothing to do with how he should be perceived as a man.
4. justice is not only fallible, but often functionally retarded. i first opined that it must be pliable but not porous, whereas in truth it is always both.
5. both his crime AND his recent arrest speak to the worst in human nature, and the only appropriate thing to do at this unfortunate juncture would be to release him. anything else would not only be uncivilized, but arrogant.
i’ve been more than a little appalled by the vehement outcry for blood (though i’m sure the feeling of disbelief is mutual), and i clearly and condescendingly believe that such a tact is largely symptomatic of either myopia or moral vanity.
now back to Phineas and Ferb.
